Tehran asked Washington to extend negotiations, and the US agreed. However, the ceasefire between the countries has come to an end, according to US President Donald Trump.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran has asked us to continue 'talks.' We have agreed to do so, but the United States has stated to them, in no uncertain terms, that the ceasefire is over!" Trump wrote.

On July 8, US President Donald Trump officially announced the end of the ceasefire with Iran, saying the decision was prompted by attacks carried out by the Iranian regime against commercial vessels.

During the night of July 9, the United States launched strikes on Iranian territory for a second consecutive day. According to US officials, the military hit nearly 100 targets.

Trump later said that following the latest wave of strikes, Tehran contacted Washington and proposed reaching an agreement. The US President added that he is still considering the offer.

Meanwhile, Axios reported that the Trump administration is weighing the possibility of a prolonged military campaign against Tehran. The outlet noted, however, that further developments will depend on Iran's next moves.

At the same time, Western media report that Washington is preparing for a possible escalation with Iran in the Strait of Hormuz, where renewed exchanges of attacks cannot be ruled out.
