The US Department of State has announced $25 million in assistance for programs aimed at the return and rehabilitation of Ukrainian children forcibly deported by Russia, according to the State Department’s website.
What the funds will be used for
According to the Department of State, the allocated funds will support:
- The identification of deported children;
- Their return to Ukraine;
- The rehabilitation of Ukrainian children and youth who were forcibly relocated by Russia.
US funding will support two types of programs. The first focuses on directly tracking deported children. The second involves projects that assist the Ukrainian government and trusted local partners in rehabilitating those who have been returned.
US position
The State Department emphasized that the United States continues to fund dozens of programs to assist civilians affected by Russia’s war against Ukraine.
"President Trump has made clear that tragic bloodshed in Ukraine must stop, and his Administration remains fully committed to securing a lasting peace," the statement said.
In August 2025, US First Lady Melania Trump wrote a letter to Vladimir Putin regarding Ukrainian children taken by the Russian administration. The letter was delivered to the Kremlin leader by Donald Trump ahead of a summit in Alaska.
In December 2025, the US First Lady reported that, as part of humanitarian efforts between Ukraine and Russia, seven abducted Ukrainian children were able to return home.
On February 12, 2026, the White House stated that Melania Trump had once again helped facilitate the return of abducted Ukrainian children to their families.
