The United States has imposed new sanctions against the Russian Federation. The list includes four individuals, three legal entities, and one cargo ship, according to the US Treasury Department.

It is worth noting that the formal reason for the sanctions is allegedly countering terrorism. However, everyone on the list is connected to the theft of grain from temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine and its supply to Yemen.

Who is on the list

The following entities and individuals have been added to the sanctions list:

  • Yuri Belyakov

  • Vyacheslav Vidanov

  • Sohrab Ghayrat

  • Hushang Ghayrat

  • LLC Edison

  • LLC Kolibri Group

  • LLC Sky Frame

  • AM Asia M6 Ltd, Hong Kong

  • The Russian-flagged bulk carrier AM Theseus

Sanctions have been imposed on individuals linked to Iranian financier and head of a network of shell companies and vessels, Saeed al-Jamal. Specifically, Belyakov and Vidanov are the captains of the vessel AM Theseus, also known as Zafar, which transported Ukrainian grain from occupied Crimea.

Others on the list include Afghan-born Russian citizens Hushang and Sohrab Ghayrat, who are the founders of Sky Frame and Kolibri Group.

The sanctions list also includes Karina Rotenberg, the wife of Russian billionaire Boris Rotenberg, who was originally sanctioned in March 2022. However, the US Treasury has not provided an explanation for this decision.

EU sanctions against Russia

Since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Western countries have imposed a series of sanctions against the Kremlin. These measures included freezing the assets of Russian oligarchs and politicians, restricting access to international financial markets, banning the export of technology and high-tech goods, and limiting the import of energy resources from Russia.

Sanctions were also introduced against Russian banks.

On February 24 of this year, the EU Council approved the 16th package of sanctions against Russia, targeting, in particular, the enemy’s shadow fleet as well as banks that circumvent restrictions.

On January 10, the United States imposed sanctions on more than 30 Russian oil service companies. Additionally, the restrictions affected a Serbian company linked to Gazprom Neft.

Interestingly, the EU had concerns that Donald Trump, after his inauguration as US president, might revoke Biden’s executive orders on sanctions against Russia.

However, on March 17, the White House confirmed that Trump could impose sanctions on Russia if his negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin are unsuccessful.

On March 13, it also became known that the US did not extend permission for Russian banks to process European payments for oil sales.

The US Treasury Department has already stated that the United States is considering imposing the toughest sanctions against Russia and that if necessary, such a decision will be made without hesitation.
