Ukrainian Foreign Ministry urges world not to link Trump assassination attempt suspect to Ukraine
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has urged the global community to avoid artificially linking the suspect in the alleged assassination attempt on US presidential candidate Donald Trump to Ukraine, stated Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Heorhii Tykhyi.
'Yes, we see in the news that the suspect had previously publicly supported Ukraine. But look, there are hundreds of millions of people in the United States who support Ukraine, and clearly, this is a diverse group of people. We call on everyone to refrain from artificially connecting the suspect’s actions to Ukraine,' Tykhyi said.
The spokesperson emphasized that Ukraine strongly condemns "this criminal act and all forms of political violence."
'We are pleased that the suspect was detained so quickly and want to stress that he has no connections to Ukrainian state institutions and has never fought for Ukraine in the International Legion or other units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine," Tykhyi added.
Trump assassination attempt
On September 15, Secret Service agents opened fire on an armed man near the golf club where presidential candidate Donald Trump was present.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation described the incident as "what appears to be an attempted assassination."
The suspect in the alleged attempt is 58-year-old Ryan Routh from Hawaii, who was arrested shortly after the event.
Andriy Kovalenko, head of the Center for Countering Disinformation, noted that Russian propaganda will use the shooting incident against Ukraine and attempt to propagate conspiracy theories regarding a 'Ukrainian link.'
At the same time, media reports revealed that Routh had expressed support for Ukraine on social media and had a website where he tried to raise funds and recruit volunteers for the war against Russia.
