Ukraine's Representative to UN names two decisions to accelerate end of Russian terror
Ukraine has called on its partner states to remove restrictions on using provided weaponry for long-range strikes against military targets within Russian territory. Additionally, Kyiv is encouraging allies to intercept Russian missiles and drones near its airspace, according to Kyslytsya's statement on the social media platform X.
In his speech at the UN Security Council in New York, Kyslytsya addressed UN members and partners, stating that these two specific decisions proposed by Ukraine would help put an end to Russian terror sooner.
“First, to acknowledge Ukraine's right to long-range strikes on all legitimate military targets throughout Russian territory. Second, to engage partners' air defense capabilities to shoot down missiles and drones close to their airspace,” he said.
Kyslytsya emphasized that neither of these steps is escalatory.
“On the contrary, they will deter Russia, reduce terror and the number of casualties,” he noted.
Ukraine’s calls for lifting restrictions on strikes inside Russia
Ukraine has long been urging partner countries to lift Western-imposed restrictions on the use of their weaponry for strikes against military targets deep within Russia.
Recently, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy echoed this call following a massive Russian missile and drone attack on August 26. Ukrainian air defense forces successfully intercepted 102 rockets and 99 drones during the assault.
Washington has responded to Zelenskyy’s call, stating that the US will continue discussions with Ukraine regarding the removal of restrictions on long-range strikes against Russia. According to John Kirby, Coordinator for Strategic Communications at the National Security Council of the White House, such discussions will occur in a non-public format.
Furthermore, on August 27, Politico reported that Ukraine is preparing to present the US with a list of targets within Russia for long-range strikes.
