The Ukrainian Parliament (Verkhovna Rada) has dismissed Rustem Umerov of his position as the head of the State Property Fund. He is set to become the new Minister of Defense, replacing Oleksii Reznikov, according to MP Yaroslav Zhelezniak.

302 MPs supported the decision.

Today, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is expected to propose Umerov's appointment as the Minister of Defense of Ukraine. A vote in the Rada is scheduled for tomorrow.

Background

On September 3, RBC-Ukraine sources revealed upcoming changes in the Ministry of Defense. It was mentioned that Reznikov would be dismissed and Umerov would be appointed as the Minister of Defense. Later, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed this information.

Rumors of Reznikov's resignation had been circulating for a while, particularly following a series of scandals on the Ministry of Defense's procurement of military goods and ammunition at inflated prices.

Rustem Umerov

Umerov was born in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, into a family of immigrants from Alushta, Crimea.

In September 2019, he was elected as a member of parliament from the Holos faction. Umerov chaired the Temporary Commission of Inquiry on issues of monitoring the receipt and use of international material and technical aid.

In September 2022, Umerov became the head of the State Property Fund.
