The Ukrainian Armed Forces continue to expand the area of their operation in the Kursk region of the Russian Federation, taking control of new settlements. Supposedly, Ukrainian fighters have already managed to enter the district center of Korenevo.

RBC-Ukraine shows maps of the battles below and provides the main news from the latest developments in the Kursk region.

Over the past few days, clashes have been taking place along almost the entire frontline. Russian outlet Agenstvo reports that the area of Kursk region covered by the fighting has allegedly increased by 10% since Monday.

The Ukrainian Armed Forces expanded the combat zone from approximately 1,050 to 1,150 square kilometers, as stated yesterday by the head of the Armed Forces, Oleksandr Syrskyi, adding that the advance into Russian territory is 35 kilometers and the Armed Forces control 82 settlements.

At the same time, analysts at the Institute for the Study of War continue to believe that Ukrainian forces do not doctrinally control the entire territory within the claimed advance. However, according to ISW, the establishment of the commandant's office is likely to allow Ukraine to coordinate military operations in the region.

The map of the Ukrainian DeepState project was also updated overnight. It shows that the area of the liberated’ territory in the Kursk region covers 507.76 square kilometers, while the grey area is 640.92 square kilometers. The total area is 1,148.68 square kilometers, which is close to the figure announced yesterday by Ukrainian Armed Forces Commander Oleksandr Syrskyi.

Meanwhile, ISW writes about the ongoing fighting near Korenevo. Interestingly, the so-called Russian military commanders report that a large column of Russians was broken near this settlement, but do not provide photos. According to them, the invaders repeated their mistake near Rylsk (on the night of 9 August, the Armed Forces of Ukraine, probably with a volley from HIMARS systems, burned a bunch of Russian equipment along with personnel). However, there is currently no official confirmation of this.

In the morning, Ukrainian Telegram channels shared a photo of a Ukrainian Armed Forces soldier allegedly in the western part of Korenevo. The Russians complain that Korenevo is blocking the road to Rylsk and that by capturing Rylsk, Ukrainian forces will immediately leave a bunch of border posts in the area without supplies and support.

Based on geolocation footage, analysts write that the Ukrainian Armed Forces have recently advanced and are operating in Safonovka (28 km from the international border).

Meanwhile, the Russian Ministry of Defense reports continuing Ukrainian attacks near Kauchuk (northeast of Korenevo and 27 km from the international border).

Russian military commanders also claim that the village of Bondarevka (east of Sudzha) has fallen under Ukrainian control. ISW, referring to geolocation footage published on 15 August, indicates that Ukrainian forces were advancing within the village.

Russians' versions of the situation with the settlement Plekhovo (south of Sudzha and 2 km from the international border) differ. Some claim that the Ukrainians do not control the entire settlement, while others say that Ukraine is in full control.

Ukrainian Armed Forces' operation in Kursk region

A border breakthrough in the Kursk region of Russia from the direction of Sumy occurred on August 6, 2024. The Ukrainian military and political leadership did not officially announce the operation until almost a week later.

Currently, the Ukrainian Armed Forces are continuing their advance, but according to analysts, it is no longer as rapid as before due to the Russians' pulling up reserves. However, Ukraine has already managed to advance 35 km into Russia. In addition, a Ukrainian military commandant's office has been set up in the Kursk region, headed by Major General Eduard Moskaliov.

The possibility of organizing a humanitarian corridor for Russian civilians both towards Ukraine and Russia is also being discussed.

This offensive has already allowed Ukraine to significantly replenish its exchange fund, forcing Moscow to change its position on this issue.

As the head of the Defense Intelligence of Ukraine, Kyrylo Budanov, said yesterday, during the exchange negotiations, Ukraine will primarily demand that Russia return seriously ill and severely wounded prisoners, and women, and pay special attention to the defenders of Azovstal.
