Ukraine’s allies finalize security guarantees, send message to Trump – Reuters

About 30 leaders, mainly from Europe but also from Türkiye, Australia, and Canada, will meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to discuss future security guarantees for Kyiv. The allies' efforts are complicated by the lack of clear guarantees from the US, Reuters reports.
According to the agency, about 30 leaders will hold talks today with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on future security guarantees for Kyiv in the event of a truce with Russia. They hope they have done enough to convince the United States to support their efforts.
The summit of the Coalition of the Willing, which will be held both in person and virtually, will bring together leaders mainly from Europe, as well as Türkiye, Australia, and Canada.
The countries have been negotiating for months at various levels to determine their military contribution to Ukraine and help deter Russia from attacking it again after a final truce.
However, these efforts have recently reached an impasse, as governments have stated that any military role for Europe would require its own security guarantees from the US as a precautionary measure.
Meanwhile, President Donald Trump has made no clear commitments to provide them.
Meanwhile, yesterday, French President Emmanuel Macron said alongside Zelenskyy in Paris that coalition leaders would approve plans on Thursday for security guarantees that would be provided by their militaries.
Two anonymous European officials said that detailed technical plans had already been finalized, without going into detail about what that actually means.
Anonymous officials said the goal would be to send a political signal to Trump, highlighting the lack of progress toward direct peace talks between Vladimir Putin and Zelenskyy since the Trump-Putin summit in August and urging Trump to increase pressure on Moscow now.
According to a concept note sent to participants, seen by Reuters, British and French army commanders, who held detailed meetings with their coalition counterparts last week, were to brief leaders on Thursday.
Security guarantees for Ukraine
Yesterday, September 3, the Ukrainian President explained that European security guarantees for Ukraine may not be enough to deter Vladimir Putin from a new invasion.
He explained why the participation of the United States is necessary.
Security guarantees for Ukraine began to be actively discussed after August 18, when President Trump met with Zelenskyy and European leaders at the White House.
After the meeting at the White House, the Ukrainian President said that the details of the guarantees were to be agreed upon within 10 days, but later the deadline was pushed back another week.
