Ukraine is ready to transfer its defense technologies to Japan, including naval drones, and wants to receive access to air defense missiles in return, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy said, Kyodo reports.
"Japan is one of the countries that has licenses or its own production of missiles and air defense systems capable of countering ballistic threats. And of course, we want to cooperate, have joint production or exchange knowledge," Zelenskyy said.
According to him, Ukraine is ready to open our technologies — for example, naval drones for coastal defense.
"Without having our own fleet, we managed to destroy part of the Russian fleet in Black Sea using our naval drones. They do not approach our shores because of their capabilities," the head of state added.
The President of Ukraine also explained that Japan may find useful Ukraine's achievements in cybersecurity, interceptor drones, management of energy and critical infrastructure in crisis conditions, broader experience of modern warfare, and so on.
Weapons export and technology exchange
Earlier, Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine is preparing agreements on the controlled export of weapons. It may provide Ukraine with additional funds for the production of scarce systems.
Earlier, Ukraine and Croatia agreed to expand joint production of armaments. Countries signed a Letter of Intent on deepening defense-industrial cooperation.
As noted by Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council Rustem Umerov (state coordinating body for national security and defense), the first real export contracts will appear no earlier than the second half of 2026. This is connected with lengthy procedures of certification, testing, and procurement on the part of foreign partners.
Priority product for sale will be Ukrainian drones (air, ground, and naval), part of which will be produced under the Danish model (investments directly into Ukrainian production capacities or creation of joint enterprises).
