Ukraine and Spain are scaling up defense cooperation, focusing on strengthening air defense, supplying long-range munitions, and jointly producing drones, stated Ukraine’s Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov following a meeting with his Spanish counterpart Margarita Robles.
Strengthening air defense and new missiles
According to Fedorov, protecting Ukraine’s skies has been identified as the key priority of the cooperation.
The sides are working on supplying missiles for Patriot systems and integrating different types of weapons to improve their effectiveness.
"Spain’s contribution to the PURL mechanism and its support for supplying Patriot missiles are critical for protecting the skies and preserving infrastructure," Mykhailo Fedorov stressed.
Ukraine and Spain also plan to modernize decommissioned air defense systems and cooperate within a European project to develop counter-ballistic solutions.
Aid and munitions
Spain confirmed its decision to allocate €1 billion in aid to Ukraine in 2026.
A separate weapons package was also announced, including VAMTAC armored vehicles and a batch of 155mm artillery shells.
In addition, the countries agreed to further cooperation in scaling up the production of Ukrainian drones.
According to the minister, Ukraine continues to expand its capabilities to strike the enemy’s economic potential.
"On the President’s instructions, we continue to increase enemy losses, strike its economic potential, and expand our own defense production," the Defense Minister said.
Spain’s support for the Ukrainian Armed Forces
It was recently reported that Spain will provide Ukrainian border guards with 100 VAMTAC armored vehicles. In addition to high-mobility equipment, the new support package includes critical 155mm ammunition, with the first deliveries expected as early as early May.
In April, Mykhailo Fedorov also held a series of talks with Belgian and Spanish counterparts. The sides coordinated cooperation priorities ahead of the next Ramstein meeting, focusing on Air Force training and the delivery of new aircraft.
Earlier, the Spanish government officially announced the transfer of PAC-2 missiles for Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine. Madrid emphasized that despite limited stockpiles, protecting Ukraine’s skies from Russian attacks remains an unconditional priority for the country.
