The Spanish government has announced the transfer of five PAC-2 missiles for Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine, according to El País.

The intention to transfer the missiles became known during Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s visit to Spain, which took place on March 18, 2026.

The Patriot PAC-2 missiles are in service with a Spanish Army anti-aircraft artillery regiment stationed at a Marine Corps base in Valencia.

Sources note that these missiles are not the most modern, as the Spanish Ministry of Defense is implementing a program to upgrade them to the PAC-3 version. At the same time, one missile costs between $3 million and $4 million, so the total cost of the package is about $20 million.

The agency notes that the main problem remains the shortage of these missiles on the global market, rather than funding, as demand for them has surged significantly amid the war in the Middle East.

Raytheon, the American manufacturer of these missiles, is currently unable to meet the growing demand. In particular, the delivery of four Patriot 3+ batteries, which Spain ordered for nearly 1.5 billion euros, has been postponed until 2031.

Spain’s aid to Ukraine

Spain has allocated €615 million in aid to Ukraine, which will be used to purchase weapons and fund defense systems.

In addition, Madrid announced the provision of another €1 billion for the purchase of military equipment from the United States, to be subsequently transferred to Ukraine. These funds will complement energy infrastructure support programs and are intended to strengthen Ukraine’s air defense system.
