Spain will soon allocate one billion euros to purchase military equipment from the United States for transfer to Ukraine, Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares stated, according to El País.
It is noted that this aid package will be in addition to the package intended to support Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. It was also reported that the new assistance package is expected to strengthen Ukraine’s air defense.
Speaker of the Congress Francina Armengol and Senate President Pedro Rollán received Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the Hall of Lost Footsteps of the Congress of Deputies in Madrid.
During his third visit to Spain, the Ukrainian President also plans to meet with King Felipe VI and Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.
Ukraine–Spain relations
Earlier, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said his visit to Spain would be productive and open a new stage of cooperation with one of Ukraine’s strongest partners.
Moreover, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez had previously promised to join the PURL program, which provides for the purchase of American weapons for Ukraine using European funds.
A number of NATO countries are taking part in the US weapons procurement for Ukraine using their own funds.
This mechanism is called PURL (Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List), under which allies buy and deliver the most urgently needed weapons for Ukraine, agreed in advance with Kyiv.
More than half of NATO member states currently participate in the PURL program.
