Ukraine and Romania have officially become strategic partners, agreeing to build new power transmission lines and cooperate on drone production, stated Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during a joint press conference with Romanian President Nicușor Dan.
One of the key outcomes of the summit is defense cooperation, including the start of joint drone manufacturing.
According to President Dan, the drone production facilities will be located in Romania. Both sides believe this will not only strengthen Ukraine’s defense capabilities but also boost technological development in both countries.
A separate agreement focuses on energy security. The signed documents include the launch of two new power supply lines.
This decision is critically important for the border regions, as it will significantly improve electricity supply in the Chernivtsi region and help stabilize the local power grid.
Leaders also discussed simplifying logistics, with work underway to open new border crossing points between Ukraine and Romania. The first results are expected by summer 2026.
For context, on December 31 last year, the Romanian authorities announced their participation in the PURL program, under which American weapons are being purchased for Ukraine.
Additionally, as part of cooperation with Romania, Ukraine has introduced Romanian Language Day, which will be celebrated on August 31 each year.
