The United Kingdom has sent a military officer to Greenland amid sharp remarks by US President Donald Trump about the possible takeover of the island, according to Independent.
The outlet, citing a spokesperson for the UK government, reports that the United Kingdom has officially confirmed the deployment of a military officer to Greenland to participate in a joint allied intelligence group.
According to the government, the decision was made at Denmark’s request and is related to preparations for the international Arctic Endurance exercises.
The UK government spokesperson said that London shares Trump’s concerns about security in the High North and sees its participation as part of strengthening NATO and the Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF) in the region.
The government representative noted that this involves "stepping up with stronger exercising, to deter the Russian aggression and the Chinese activity."
The British officer will join the allied group coordinating intelligence, planning, and logistics ahead of the deployment of larger forces during the high-latitude exercises.
Military presence in Greenland is increasing
Ahead of the trilateral meeting at the White House with representatives from Greenland, the US, and Denmark, Copenhagen announced an increase in its military contingent in the Arctic and on the island.
French President Emmanuel Macron also announced that French forces will participate in joint NATO exercises organized by Denmark on Greenland’s territory. The first units have already been deployed to the exercise site.
This decision was made following Washington’s criticism of insufficient security measures in the strategically important autonomous territory.
Earlier reports indicated that Germany has officially confirmed its participation in strengthening security in Greenland and the Arctic within the NATO framework.
The German government emphasized that the region’s strategic importance requires comprehensive protection and continuous coordination among all Alliance members.
