The UK has responded to US President Trump’s statement about the country’s possible withdrawal from NATO. Prime Minister Keir Starmer has vowed to prevent the United Kingdom from being dragged into war, according to Sky News.
Starmer on NATO
"NATO is the single most effective military alliance the world has ever seen. It's kept us safe for many decades and we are fully committed to NATO", the Prime Minister says.
Starmer was responding to a question about Trump’s interview with the British agency The Telegraph, in which the US President stated that he is seriously considering the US withdrawal from the alliance.
The Prime Minister also emphasizes that, regardless of pressure from other leaders, he will put the United Kingdom's national interests first.
Trump announced withdrawal from NATO
US President Donald Trump stated that he is seriously considering the United States’ withdrawal from NATO. He cited the refusal of NATO allies to support a US operation against Iran as the reason.
Trump also stated that he never believed in NATO and considers it a paper tiger.
Rubio promised to review membership
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that after the war with Iran ends, Washington will review its membership in NATO.
According to him, the alliance has turned into a one-way street. The US keeps troops in Europe to protect its allies, but when support was needed, it refused to allow the use of its bases.
France closed its airspace to American planes carrying cargo for Israel, Spain completely banned the use of its airfields for strikes against Iran, and Italy refused to allow a landing at the Sigonella base in Sicily.
Trump criticized the allies for cowardice and called their behavior unacceptable.
