UK expects Trump to remain committed to Ukraine and NATO
British Defense Secretary John Healey expressed confidence that the administration of new US President Donald Trump will continue to support NATO and Ukraine in its confrontation with Russia, according to Reuters.
“And I expect the U.S. to remain alongside allies like the UK, standing with Ukraine for as long as it takes to prevail over (Russian President Vladimir) Putin's invasion,” Healy says.
He emphasizes that Trump is aware of the importance of alliances such as NATO for international security.
Answering a question about possible changes in support for Ukraine after the US election, Healy says President Trump recognizes that countries gain security through strength, as do alliances like NATO.
According to the UK Minister, the US commitment to NATO and the security of Europe will remain strong under the new administration, although he emphasizes that European countries should increase their defense spending.
“I don't expect the U.S. to turn away from NATO. They recognize the importance of the alliance. They recognize the importance of avoiding further conflict in Europe,” Healy adds.
On November 11, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer plans to meet with French President Emmanuel Macron to discuss measures to deal with a possible reduction in US support for Ukraine under President Donald Trump.
According to Darren Jones, Chief Secretary of the UK Treasury, the UK government is considering various scenarios for future US policy toward Ukraine and discussing possible options for continued cooperation.
