UK and France to try to prevent Trump from cutting aid to Ukraine - Telegraph
The newly elected US President Donald Trump has repeatedly hinted at plans to reduce aid to Ukraine. The UK and France aim to prevent this, reports The Telegraph.
The Telegraph notes that on Monday, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer will meet with French President Emmanuel Macron. It is expected that they will make a final attempt to thwart Trump's efforts to reduce US support for Ukraine.
In particular, the leaders of the two countries will discuss whether it is possible to convince the current US President Joe Biden to authorize Ukraine to launch Storm Shadow missiles deeper into Russian territory.
According to The Telegraph, London hopes that Biden will finally provide the approval Kyiv has been seeking for several months.
These efforts are being made at a time when world leaders are trying to understand how radically Trump, who won the US presidential election last week, intends to change America's policy towards Ukraine.
The Telegraph reminds us that throughout his presidential campaign, Trump spoke about ending the war in Ukraine from day one, which raised concerns that he would force Kyiv to accept territories ceded to Russia.
"We are very keen to make sure we can make the most of the time between now and Jan 20 [when Mr Trump becomes US president] and not just put everything on hold until the next administration," one source said.
Another source reported that Biden is expected to open the taps by providing additional financial aid to Kyiv in the weeks before he leaves the White House.
It is also expected that Starmer and Macron will discuss the implications of Trump's upcoming presidency for the Middle East and the possibility of a trade war with Europe.
US aid to Ukraine
Yesterday, John Kirby, the Coordinator for Strategic Communications at the US National Security Council, stated that Biden has committed to spending all the funds allocated for Ukraine's aid.
According to him, the White House will spend every dollar it has to support Ukraine.
