British Army medics have parachuted onto the remote Atlantic island of Tristan da Cunha to help a British national with suspected hantavirus, BBC reports.

According to the media outlet, a team of six paratroopers and two military doctors parachuted from a transport aircraft. At the same time, essential supplies of oxygen and other medical equipment were air-dropped to the island.

The medics were deployed after confirmation that a British citizen on the island was likely infected with the virus.

The outlet notes that this is the first time British military personnel have been airdropped specifically to deliver medical care as part of a humanitarian operation.

Notably, Tristan da Cunha is a group of volcanic islands in the South Atlantic and the most remote British overseas territory, with a population of just 221 people. It is usually accessible only by boat.
