Trump chooses nominee for US Ambassador to NATO
The elected President of the United States, Donald Trump, has selected lawyer Matthew Whitaker as the nominee for the position of US Ambassador to NATO, according to a statement from Donald Trump.
"I have full confidence in Matt’s ability to represent the United States with strength, integrity, and unwavering dedication. I look forward to working closely with him as we continue to promote peace through strength, freedom, and prosperity around the world," Trump said.
He noted that Whitaker is "a strong warrior and a loyal patriot who will ensure the United States' are advanced and defended."
About Whitaker
It is important to note that Matthew Whitaker has never been involved in foreign policy or national security, so his political views remain unknown, according to representatives of the Democratic Party.
Whitaker served as Acting Attorney General for about three months during Trump’s first presidency — during which time he criticized the special counsel’s investigation into alleged collusion between Trump and Russia to influence the 2016 election.
Previously, he was the US Attorney for the Southern District of Iowa under President George Bush's administration.
Trump assembles his team
After winning the US presidential election on November 5, Donald Trump began announcing the names of potential members of his new administration.
While there are almost no openly pro-Russian figures among them, many of the future top officials have established themselves as significant skeptics of Ukraine.
In particular, Trump appointed Senator Marco Rubio as Secretary of State.
North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum will hold two positions in his administration: the Department of the Interior and the new US National Energy Council.
Trump chose Karoline Leavitt, a member of his previous administration, as the new press secretary.
Boris Epshteyn, a Russian-born individual, may become a special envoy for peace in Ukraine.
Trump selected Elise Stefanik as US Ambassador to the UN, who has called the organization "a cesspool of antisemitism."
