Trump nominates candidate for US Ambassador to UN: What is known
The winner of the US presidential election, Donald Trump, has nominated a candidate for the position of US Ambassador to the United Nations. The nominee is Congresswoman Elise Stefanik, Politico informs.
“I am honored to nominate Chairwoman Elise Stefanik to serve in my Cabinet as US ambassador to the United Nations,” Donald Trump said.
Politico notes that Stefanik is a staunch critic of the UN and an active supporter of Israel.
Specifically, Stefanik has repeatedly accused the UN of anti-Semitism due to the organization’s criticism of the Israel Defense Forces' war with Hamas in Gaza. In October, she called for a "complete reassessment of US funding of the United Nations " in response to attempts by Palestine to expel Israel from the UN over alleged "war crimes and human rights abuses."
Regarding Ukraine, her stance has not been as straightforward. Stefanik supported early aid packages to strengthen Ukraine's defense.
She was also one of the authors of a bill imposing sanctions on Russia's financial and energy sectors and increasing US military aid to Ukraine prior to Russia’s invasion.
However, the Congresswoman also voted against providing Ukraine an additional $61 billion in funding this year. She justified this decision by stating that while she supports military aid to Ukraine, she cannot support providing additional funds for non-lethal assistance amid the crisis at the US-Mexico border.
It is worth noting that Linda Thomas-Greenfield currently holds the position of US Ambassador to the United Nations.
Trump to become president
It is worth noting that Donald Trump won the presidential election. He will officially become the President of the United States on January 20, when the inauguration will take place.
