US President Donald Trump announced that he will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on August 15, according to his post on Truth Social.

“The highly anticipated meeting between myself, as President of the United States of America, and President Vladimir Putin, of Russia, will take place next Friday, August 15, 2025, in the Great State of Alaska,” Trump wrote.

However, according to him, further details of the meeting will not be disclosed at this time.

Why Alaska?

It is currently unknown why Trump and Putin’s meeting will take place specifically in Alaska.

However, the historical fact is that Alaska once belonged to the Russian Empire, which began exploring these lands in the late 18th century. Russia’s main interest in the region was the profitable hunting of sea otters and seals. However, due to the remoteness, harsh conditions of maintaining the colony, and declining profits, the empire began considering selling Alaska as a beneficial move.

In 1867, Russia sold Alaska to the United States for $7.2 million in gold, which is considered one of the most advantageous deals in American history.

The transfer of the territory took place on October 18 of the same year, when the Russian flag was lowered over the colony’s capital and the American flag was raised. Initially, many in the US were skeptical about the purchase, calling it Seward’s Folly (after Secretary of State William Seward, the deal’s initiator). However, later discoveries of gold, oil, and other resources made Alaska a strategically and economically valuable part of the United States.

Trump-Putin meeting

Recently, The New York Times, citing sources, reported that US President Donald Trump intends to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin next week.

This was later confirmed by the White House.

Today, Trump himself stated that his meeting with Putin will take place in a popular location.

“We start off with Russia and we'll announce a location. I think the location will be a very uh popular one for a lot of reasons, but we'll be announcing that a little bit later. I just don't want to do it now because of the importance of what we just did,” Trump said.
