September 2025 will be marked by three celestial events coinciding. Ukrainians will be able to see two of them: the "Blood Moon" and the rare disappearance of Venus behind the Moon's disk. When we will be able to enjoy these unusual phenomena and what is needed for observation, is explained by The Times of India.

September 7: Total lunar eclipse

On the night of September 7-8, the Moon will enter the Earth's full shadow.

Start: 7:30 PM Kyiv time

Peak: 8:11 PM

End: 9:56 PM

The event will last more than one and a half hours, with the total duration exceeding 5 hours. The Moon may turn reddish, which is why it is called the Blood Moon.

The eclipse will be visible across all of Ukraine, provided the Moon is above the horizon after sunset. Residents of Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, and Antarctica will also be able to enjoy the spectacle.

What makes this eclipse special?

Lunar eclipses are not rare, but this one stands out for two main reasons: its length and the number of people who will be able to see it. According to scientists, the total eclipse will last about 82 minutes, making it one of the longest in recent years.

Moreover, it will be visible across Asia, Australia, Africa, and Europe, as NASA reports, giving a vast part of the world's population the chance to see at least part of the spectacle.

By the way, while people call this eclipse the Blood Moon, there is nothing mystical or unusual about it. The red color is simply the result of sunlight being filtered through the Earth's atmosphere.

In other words, it is the same effect that makes sunsets glow with shades of red and orange.

September 19: The Moon hides Venus

In broad daylight on September 19, Venus will briefly disappear behind the Moon's disk and then reappear. This phenomenon is called the lunar occultation of Venus.

Disappearing: 2:55 PM Kyiv time

Appearing again: 4:14 PM

The event will be clearly visible in Ukraine. To observe it, it is best to use a telescope or binoculars with filters. The eclipsed Venus will also be visible in Europe, Asia, Africa, and Canada.

September 21-22: Partial solar eclipse

The month will end with a partial solar eclipse. Its peak will occur on the night of September 21-22. But this time, only residents of the Southern Hemisphere will be lucky: Australia, New Zealand, Antarctica, and the islands of the Pacific Ocean. Ukrainians will not be able to see this partial solar eclipse.

How to observe correctly

  • To watch the lunar eclipse, you will only need an open sky and some patience.
  • For Venus, it is better to use optics.
  • Never observe near the Sun during the day without eye protection.
