Three NATO countries to provide $500 million for US weapons supply to Ukraine

Norway has announced its participation in a new defense initiative launched by the United States and NATO in July, according to the statement of the Norwegian government.
The initiative refers to the PURL program (Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List) — a list of Ukraine’s priority needs that provides for the rapid delivery of US weapons systems, particularly to strengthen air defense.
As part of the first package, Sweden, Denmark, and Norway will jointly fund the purchase of US defense equipment worth 500 million dollars.
According to the Oslo government, Norway will contribute 1.5 billion Norwegian kroner, which is approximately 135 million US dollars.
"This is an important initiative from NATO and the USA. It helps ensure that Ukraine quickly receives crucial military equipment to defend themselves, and it strengthens cooperation between the United States and European countries in their support of Ukraine," Norway’s Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre stated.
The initiative envisions a series of packages developed by the United States in collaboration with NATO and Ukraine.
The first round focuses on munitions for Patriot air defense systems, as well as other critical weapons.
In addition to participating in PURL, Norway also continues to fund its large-scale support program for Ukraine and neighboring countries under the Nansen programme.
Total spending for 2025, according to the government, will reach 85 billion Norwegian kroner (7.7 billion US dollars).
Patriot systems for Ukraine
President Donald Trump announced the delivery of additional Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine, noting that they would be funded by NATO allies.
Specifically, Trump pledged to provide Ukraine with 17 Patriot systems.
On Monday, July 21, the 29th meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group took place. During the session, coalition members pledged to support Kyiv in strengthening its air defense with Patriot systems.
In particular, Germany and the United States agreed to deliver five Patriot systems to Ukraine.
Although Trump stated that the systems would be delivered to Ukraine fairly quickly, implementing the agreement could take several months.
