French President Emmanuel Macron’s plans to recognize Palestine as a state don't carry weight, said US President Donald Trump while speaking with journalists on July 25.

"What he says doesn't matter. He's a very good guy. I like him, but that statement doesn't carry weight," he said, commenting on Macron's plans.

France plans to recognize Palestine as a state

On July 24, Macron announced France's intention to recognize the State of Palestine at the United Nations General Assembly session in September. The French Foreign Ministry said this move aims to support peace in the Gaza Strip.

In the UK, officials are not rushing to follow suit, despite pressure on Prime Minister Keir Starmer from his government and Macron to recognize Palestine as a sovereign state as soon as possible.

The decision drew criticism from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The idea was also opposed in the US: Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that Washington "strongly rejects" Macron’s plan.
