Following the NATO summit in Ankara, Türkiye announced the start of a new phase in the Alliance’s development. Officials there believe the decisions made will have long-term effects, according to Hürriyet Daily News.
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan calls the NATO summit in Ankara historic in terms of both its organization and its results. According to him, the allies managed to reach a consensus despite global instability and strategic differences.
Fidan notes that the summit reaffirmed NATO’s relevance and demonstrated that member states are capable of finding common solutions even under complex geopolitical conditions.
The Minister notes that one of the most important outcomes of the meeting was the transformation of the principle of sharing defense costs among allies from a political concept into a practical policy.
He recalls that the US had long been calling on European countries to assume a greater share of responsibility for their own security, and that this position has now gained the support of the entire Alliance.
"It was in fact a rediscovery of NATO’s original role, which was not offensive but based more on defense, preserving peace and increasing prosperity and stability," emphasizeS the head of the Turkish Foreign Ministry.
Transition to NATO 3.0
That is why, according to Fidan, the Defense Industry Forum, which took place during the summit, and the political framework agreement adopted in Ankara were of great importance.
He emphasizes that NATO is now entering a new phase of development, which he calls NATO 3.0. According to him, the new model involves adapting military capabilities and the defense-industrial base to contemporary threats, as well as strengthening the resilience of logistics, arms production, and supply chains.
"At a time of such geostrategic and global shocks, confusion, differences of opinion and diverging strategic goals, the fact that member countries came together and reached consensus around certain concepts and targets is a historic success," the Minister adds.
He notes that defense contracts between allies totaling approximately $50 billion were announced during the summit.
According to him, this involves not only agreements with Turkey but also joint projects among NATO member states aimed at strengthening the Alliance’s defense capabilities.
NATO summit in Ankara
On July 7–8, the NATO summit took place in Ankara, marking one of the key international events of the year.
The allies agreed on a final declaration that calls for increased defense spending and reaffirms long-term support for Ukraine.
One of the summit’s main events was the talks between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and US President Donald Trump, following which the American leader declared a new beginning in relations with Kyiv.
Trump also noted that work on a peace agreement regarding the war is ongoing, although the process remains challenging, and expressed the US’s readiness to grant Ukraine the right to manufacture Patriot systems.
Trump also did not rule out a future visit to Kyiv and noted that Ukraine’s long-range strikes on Russian territory could bring the war closer to an end.
