Switzerland may not arrest Putin if he attends talks with Trump – The Times
Switzerland may grant immunity from arrest to Russian President Vladimir Putin if he takes part in peace talks and meets with US President Donald Trump in the country, The Times reports.
According to the agency, the Swiss government has the authority to make an exception for peace negotiations and would guarantee immunity to Putin.
Swiss Foreign Ministry spokesperson Nicolas Bideau stated that Bern regularly informs Kyiv, Moscow, and Washington of its readiness to host a new summit to seek peace in Ukraine.
However, Switzerland would be legally obligated to arrest Putin under the International Criminal Court’s warrant if the Russian leader participated in the summit.
Possible Trump-Putin meeting
Recently elected US President Donald Trump announced that Russian leader Vladimir Putin wants to meet with him, adding that plans for the meeting are underway.
Trump’s future national security advisor, Mike Waltz, later stated that a phone call between Trump and Putin is expected in the coming days or weeks while confirming that preparations for the meeting are ongoing.
Switzerland has also expressed its readiness to host a meeting between Trump and Putin on its territory to discuss the war in Ukraine. The proposal includes a trilateral dialogue involving Kyiv.
