Sweden allocates funds to Romania for replacing Patriot systems sent to Ukraine
Sweden allocated funds to replace Romania's Patriot air defense system, which Bucharest had previously transferred to Ukraine, the press service of the Swedish Ministry of Defense reports.
The Swedish government decided to allocate 300 million kronor (approximately 27 million dollars) for indirect support of Ukraine's air defense. The funds will go to Romania to help it acquire a Patriot surface-to-air missile system to replace the one provided to Ukraine.
"Romania needs resources to be able to purchase Patriot-type missiles, sensors, and other equipment to replace the systems the country supplied to Ukraine in 2024. Therefore, 300 million are being transferred to Romania," the statement says.
The funds will come from previously announced support packages for Ukraine.
Patriot for Ukraine
Ukraine received its first Patriot air defense system in the spring of 2023. Later, amid increasing Russian air attacks, Ukraine urged its partners to supply more air defense systems, including Patriot.
In the summer of 2024, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that Ukraine needs 25 Patriot systems to close the skies over the country.
Germany, Romania, and the Netherlands agreed to provide additional systems. In early October, it was reported that the Patriot system from Romania had been delivered to Ukraine.
In addition, the Netherlands transferred three Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine at the end of November.
