Stoltenberg urges Hungary to swiftly approve Sweden's NATO membership bid
Hungary should promptly ratify Sweden's NATO membership application, says NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg.
It is noted that all but two of the 31 NATO members - Türkiye and Hungary - have endorsed Sweden's desire to join the Alliance.
"The government of Hungary has repeatedly stated that it will not be the last ally of NATO to ratify Sweden's membership," said Stoltenberg during talks with the President of Hungary in Brussels.
He added that he now counts on Hungary to fulfill this commitment.
"The Hungarian government has repeatedly said that it will not be the last Nato ally to ratify Sweden’s accession," the Secretary-General said.
Sweden's NATO membership
Sweden applied for NATO membership last year. Since then, all NATO countries have ratified it, except for Türkiye and Hungary.
Recently, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan applied for parliamentary consideration, stating that he would fully support the parliamentary ratification of Sweden's NATO membership. He also noted that Stockholm had not taken sufficient action on Kurdish militants.
In late October, the Hungarian Parliament once again rejected the proposal to hold a vote on Sweden's NATO membership application.
