Britain is ready to support the idea of a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine without a prior ceasefire, a proposal earlier raised by US President Donald Trump. The statement was made by a spokesperson for UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, according to The Guardian.

He noted that Britain wants to see a lasting and just peace for Ukraine, so that people are not afraid of a repeated attack by Russia.

According to the spokesperson, Britain supports an agreement that will ensure peace as soon as possible, but at the same time will stop the killings and translate this into a "lasting peace supported by security guarantees."

When asked whether this means a change of position, Starmer's spokesperson replied: "We want to see an end to the killing. If you can bring about an end to the killing and bring about a sustained peace in one go, then all the better."

He added that Ukraine must determine its borders itself in the course of negotiations, emphasizing that "international borders must not be changed by force."

Format of the peace agreement

Ukraine advocates the establishment of a ceasefire regime, and only after that the discussion of a possible peace agreement.

However, Russia is against such a scenario. After a meeting with President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, US President Donald Trump stated that he would like to conclude a peace agreement immediately, and not an agreement on a ceasefire.

The Office of the President commented on Trump's change of position. They noted that this could be a subject for discussion, but such a scenario could put Ukraine in a losing position.
