Starlink will be restricted in Ukraine: Who is exempt

Starlink will be restricted in Ukraine: Who is exempt Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov (Vitalii Nosach, RBC-Ukraine)

Only authorized Starlink terminals will operate on the territory of Ukraine. This will be the next step in preventing the use of satellite internet by Russia on its drones according to a Telegram post from Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov.

Fedorov noted that Ukraine, together with Starlink, has already taken initial steps that quickly produced results in countering Russian drones.

"The next step is the implementation of a system that will allow only authorized terminals to operate on the territory of Ukraine," the minister said.

According to him, instructions for Ukrainian users on how to register Starlink for verification will be published in the coming days. Unverified terminals will be disabled.

"The registration process will be simple, fast, and convenient for users. We will publish detailed instructions soon. We thank Starlink and SpaceX for their cooperation and proactive support of Ukrainians," Fedorov added.

Russians using Starlink on drones

It is recalled that recent reports indicated Russian forces have increasingly been using Starlink on attack drones to bypass Ukraine’s air defense systems.

The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) reported that Russians are installing Starlink on their Molniya-2 attack drones.

On the same day, Defense Minister Fedorov said that the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense had quickly contacted SpaceX to address the issue.

Later, the ministry’s technology advisor, Serhiy Beskrestnov, stated that SpaceX, at Ukraine's request, began implementing initial countermeasures against the use of Starlink terminals by Russia for drone attacks in Ukraine.

Today, Elon Musk announced that he has taken measures to stop the unauthorized use of Starlink satellite internet by the Russian side.
