South Korean president accused of treason
South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has been accused of treason following multiple complaints, Yonhap News reports.
“Numerous complaints have been submitted, and an investigation is under way in accordance with the process,” said Park Se Hyun, who heads the special investigation team tasked with examining Yoon’s brief declaration of martial law last week.
He added that prosecutors are investigating allegations against Yoon for treason and abuse of power.
Martial law in South Korea
On December 3, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol declared martial law in the country. The measure banned all political activities, triggering a political crisis nationwide.
However, the martial law lasted only six hours. Following widespread condemnation, the president revoked the decision and even issued an apology. Despite this, the police initiated an investigation into President Yoon Suk Yeol.
The controversy escalated to discussions about impeachment. However, South Korea’s parliament failed to pass a vote to impeach President Yoon. This failure led to massive protests across the country, with demonstrators demanding the president’s resignation.
