The South Korean parliament failed to vote to impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol. The country’s leader was targeted for removal from office due to the declaration of martial law, report Yonhap and CNN.

On Saturday, December 7, the National Assembly of South Korea attempted to vote on the impeachment of the country’s president. The president's party members left the voting chamber. Only two lawmakers remained inside, while another legislator who returned voted against the proposal.

The opposition expressed outrage over the boycott of the vote by members of the ruling party.

As expected, the parliament ultimately failed to pass the impeachment vote. The next opportunity for legislators to vote on the president's impeachment is Wednesday, December 11.

Ahead of the impeachment vote, a crowd gathered near the National Assembly in Seoul, demanding the impeachment of Yoon Suk Yeol over the declaration of martial law.

Martial law in South Korea

Recall that on December 3, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol declared martial law. The reasons were not due to a military threat but rather internal political circumstances.

Later, the South Korean government approved the lifting of martial law, and the president ended the special regime. In total, martial law in South Korea lasted about six hours.

The South Korean opposition issued a strong request to the president, demanding his resignation. Law enforcement authorities have launched an investigation against the president.

Yoon Suk Yeol apologized for declaring martial law but did not resign.
