The South Korean police have launched an investigation against President Yoon Suk Yeol, accusing him of treason following the declaration of martial law in the country, the South Korean Yonhap news agency reports.

The investigation against President Yoon Suk Yeol was initiated after receiving two complaints:

  • From the opposition Rebuilding Korea Party;
  • From a group of 59 activists.

"The complaints accused not only Yoon but also former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun, Army Chief of Staff Gen. Park An-su, and Interior Minister Lee Sang-min of treason and other related charges for their roles in the declaration and subsequent lifting of martial law on Tuesday," the news agency states.

Political crisis in South Korea

On December 3, Yoon Suk Yeol made an unexpected announcement imposing martial law in South Korea. He stated that the measure was prompted by the activities of opposition forces, which he described as "anti-state" and accused of attempting to paralyze the government.

This decision caused massive protests and clashes with law enforcement and military personnel near the parliament building.

Within hours, the South Korean parliament passed a resolution calling for an immediate end to martial law. The government subsequently supported the resolution.

Later that evening, Yoon Suk Yeol announced the lifting of martial law, which had been in effect for over six hours.
