Romania's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Toiu Oana, arrived in Kyiv on August 7. She held a series of meetings and visited the children's hospital Okhmatdyt, the official X account of the Romanian Foreign Minister reports.

Toiu's arrival in Kyiv marks the first visit by a Romanian Foreign Minister since Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022. It is also her first visit to Ukraine since taking office.

"This is a strong signal of our steadfast solidarity with Ukraine. I will hold discussions with senior Ukrainian officials on all topics of common interest, and then continue with a visit to Cernăuți," Toiu Oana said.

The Romanian Foreign Minister visited Okhmatdyt in Kyiv a year after the hospital was cynically shelled by Russian forces. Toiu Oana also visited the School of Superheroes, which operates at the National Cancer Institute.

"It showed me that this is what the Ukrainians are fighting for: for their children's wellbeing, for their freedom, for their future. Romania will continue to be by the Ukrainian side in its legitimate fight," the Romanian Foreign Minister stated.

Meeting with officials

While in Kyiv, Toiu Oana met with Ruslan Stefanchuk, Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.

The two discussed the security situation in the region, strengthening air defense, support for the peace process, and the importance of progress toward a just peace on Ukraine's terms.

Special attention was paid to the need to unblock negotiations on Ukraine's EU accession.

The sides also discussed prospects for interparliamentary cooperation, particularly in the Ukraine-Romania-Moldova trilateral format, and the protection of Ukrainian children temporarily residing in Romania.

Air defense from Romania

In early October 2024, Romania provided Ukraine with an air defense system.

Previously, Romanian President Nicușor Dan stated that Romania would continue supporting Ukraine in the military sphere, but currently does not plan to transfer another Patriot system.

Furthermore, Ukraine, Romania, and Moldova are set to establish a regional cyber alliance.
