Kremlin representative Kirill Dmitriev was spotted in Paris the day after the Coalition of the Willing summit. According to journalists, he may have visited the US Embassy for talks on the war in Ukraine, Le Monde reports.
What the media wrote about Dmitriev's visit and what Macron's office says
According to the outlet's sources, Dmitriev, who is a key Russian representative in contacts with Washington, was seen on January 7 on Faubourg Saint-Honoré. This occurred immediately after a meeting of leaders that included Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Donald Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, and Jared Kushner.
The Élysée Palace officially denied reports that Putin's representative visited the French president's residence. Journalists, however, note that Dmitriev was received at the United States Embassy located nearby.
Context of diplomatic meetings
After the Coalition of the Willing summit, the Ukrainian delegation continued talks in Paris.
Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council Rustem Umerov confirmed consultations with the US and with national security advisers from France, Britain, Germany, Italy, Poland, and Türkiye.
At the time of Dmitriev's alleged appearance at the US Embassy, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had already left Paris and arrived on a visit to Cyprus.
Peace talks
On January 6 in Paris, Ukraine, the United States, and countries of the Coalition of the Willing discussed security guarantees as part of a future peace agreement. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the guarantees should include legally binding steps by allies in the event of renewed Russian aggression.
The Coalition of the Willing, together with Ukraine, signed a joint declaration on security guarantees to ensure lasting peace after the war. The text of the document was coordinated with the United States.
Ukraine, France, and the United Kingdom also signed a declaration of intent regarding the possible deployment of multinational forces on Ukrainian territory.
Meanwhile, Germany is ready to contribute to a ceasefire regime, but without sending its own contingent.
Belgium, in turn, plans to involve its air force and navy, while Canada is considering deploying its troops to Ukraine, starting with an expansion of training missions.
Today, January 8, the Ukrainian president reported that he is ready to finalize a document on security guarantees for Ukraine with President Donald Trump.
Zelenskyy also said that the Ukrainian delegation at talks in France presented the United States with options for finalizing the framework to end the war, and that feedback from Russia is now expected.
