Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said at Ukraine's Independence Day celebrations that Canada understands the lessons of history well and does not trust Russia's Vladimir Putin.

According to Carney, true peace and security for Ukraine are only possible with reliable guarantees.

He compared the current situation to Ronald Reagan's negotiations with the USSR, when his motto was trust, but verify.

He stressed that Putin is not Mikhail Gorbachev (former president of the USSR) and seeks an empire, not reform.

The Prime Minister noted that the Russian leader has repeatedly broken his promises, from the Minsk agreements to the present day, and is responsible for thousands of deaths and millions of victims.

He said that Putin had unleashed a tragedy that had claimed millions of lives, that he terrorized the skies, threatened the cities, and had kidnapped children, but added that Putin could be stopped since the Russian economy was weakening

At the same time, Carney expressed confidence that Putin can be stopped: Russia's economy is weakening, the country is becoming increasingly isolated, while its allies are becoming stronger and more determined.

Today, in addition to the Canadian Prime Minister, US Special Envoy Keith Kellogg and defense ministers from a number of partner countries arrived in Kyiv.

On Ukraine's Independence Day, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney visited Kyiv for the first time. He announced increased support for Ukraine.

In addition, US President Donald Trump's special representative for Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, arrived in Kyiv on Independence Day, August 24. He took part in the celebrations.
