On Ukraine's Independence Day, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney visited Kyiv for the first time. He announced increased support for Ukraine.

Carney announced his visit on his X page, emphasizing the importance of this moment for Ukraine.

"On this Ukrainian Independence Day, and at this critical moment in their nation’s history, Canada is stepping up our support and our efforts towards a just and lasting peace for Ukraine," he said.

This is the first visit of the Canadian head of government to Ukraine.

Assistance from Canadian government

Canada will allocate 20 million Canadian dollars (about 15 million US dollars) for the repair and maintenance of Ukrainian Leopard 2 tanks in Poland.

The head of the Ministry of Defense also confirmed the allocation of an additional 2 billion Canadian dollars (1.48 billion US dollars) for military aid to Ukraine, announced in June by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.
