Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy should take the initiative and request a visit to Poland's Presidential Palace, stated Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski on Friday, December 5, during a morning broadcast on RMF FM.
Sikorski noted that the war is changing traditional rules of diplomatic protocol, and therefore, Zelenskyy could take the initiative and request a visit to the Presidential Palace in Poland.
His comment came in the context of President Karol Nawrocki's decision not to travel to Ukraine and expectations that Zelenskyy should express gratitude to Poland for its support during the war.
"Insistent demands for apologies and remembrance at a time when they are fighting for their lives disgust me, but on the other hand, President Zelenskyy would not lose his pride if, while passing through Poland, he requested a visit to the Presidential Palace," Sikorski said.
Journalist Tomasz Terlikowski pointed out that, according to diplomatic rules, a President with less seniority visits the one who has been in office longer. Sikorski responded that the war changes traditional protocol norms.
"I hope this is not an excuse to show hostility toward a country that is bravely fighting and keeping Putin's troops away from our borders," Sikorski added, commenting on Nawrocki's position.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has repeatedly expressed gratitude to Poland and its leadership for their support and assistance, both publicly and privately, emphasizing joint efforts to defend the region from Russian aggression.
Zelenskyy's meeting with Nawrocki
In late October, Marcin Przydacz, head of the International Policy Bureau of the Polish president's office, said that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy must come to Warsaw if he seeks a meeting with Nawrocki.
On November 24, Polish President Karol Nawrocki said during a visit to Prague that he is waiting for Zelenskyy in Warsaw and hopes he will accept the invitation.
Earlier, RBC-Ukraine reported that Polish President Karol Nawrocki criticized the US peace plan, stressing that any peace proposal must first be approved by Ukraine and must not reward the aggressor.
