Nawrocki wins Poland's presidential election
The second round of Poland’s presidential election took place on June 2. The winner was Karol Nawrocki, the candidate from the Law and Justice party.
His opponent, Civic Platform’s Rafał Trzaskowski, received 49.11% of the vote.
After his victory, Nawrocki stated that he expects Poland to continue its close partnership with Ukraine. He also emphasized the importance of addressing difficult historical issues between the two countries.
Before the second round, Nawrocki agreed not to support Ukraine’s NATO accession in exchange for the endorsement of Sławomir Mentzen, leader of the anti-Ukrainian Confederation party.
However, after the election, Nawrocki stopped categorically opposing Ukraine’s membership. He merely stated that Ukraine cannot join the Alliance while at war with Russia, and therefore, in his view, the issue is currently not worth discussing.
Recently, Nawrocki said he wants to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The date of such a meeting remains unknown.
