OpenAI may buy Google Chrome: Details

The developer of ChatGPT, the company OpenAI, has expressed its readiness to acquire the Google Chrome browser if the federal court decides on its forced sale, reports Bloomberg.
What is known
The US Department of Justice summoned OpenAI’s Head of Product, Nick Turley, to testify in the antitrust case against Google. He noted that while ChatGPT already has a Chrome extension, deeper integration could result in a significantly better product.
According to Turley, despite the agreement to integrate ChatGPT into Apple’s iPhone, OpenAI has faced difficulties in negotiations with Android smartphone manufacturers.
He also pointed out that since January, Google began paying Samsung for the pre-installation of its AI service Gemini on smartphones. Although this agreement does not formally restrict working with other companies, Turley said OpenAI has made little progress in talks with the South Korean corporation — Google is capable of outmatching any startup’s investments.
Turley expressed concern that major players like Google could essentially lock the market to companies like OpenAI by controlling key platforms such as browsers and search engines. This, in his view, directly affects users’ freedom of choice.
OpenAI also warned that a possible forced sale of Chrome could harm consumers and weaken the United States’ position in the global tech race.
