Most voters supporting Hungary’s new ruling Tisza party, led by Péter Magyar, want better relations with Ukraine, but largely oppose sending Kyiv money and weapons, according to a poll conducted by the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR).

A poll showed that 64% of Magyar’s supporters expect the future government to improve relations with Ukraine.

At the same time, only 24% of respondents support financial assistance for Kyiv, while just 12% back military aid. In addition, 52% oppose ending Hungary’s imports of Russian energy resources.

Tisza party voters strongly support domestic political changes. Around 77% favor ambitious climate policies, while 71% expect stronger protections for LGBTQ+ rights.

The survey also found that 79% of voters want the next government to improve relations with the European Union. Another 73% believe Hungary will eventually regain access to frozen EU funds for recovery.

Magyar’s election victory

Voter turnout in Hungary’s April 12 parliamentary election reached record levels.

The opposition Tisza party defeated longtime Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and his Fidesz party, securing a constitutional majority with 138 out of 199 parliamentary seats.

In late April, Péter Magyar announced plans to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Berehove, calling it the beginning of a new chapter in Ukrainian-Hungarian relations.

The Tisza leader said improving ties with Ukraine would be one of his government’s top priorities.

At the same time, Magyar has demanded greater rights for ethnic Hungarians living in Ukraine before supporting the start of Kyiv’s formal EU accession negotiations.
