Norway will not change its policy and does not plan to deploy nuclear weapons on its territory, stated Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.
"As far as Norway is concerned, we are not changing our policy. There will be no deployment of nuclear weapons in Norway," he noted.
The prime minister emphasized that Norway is a NATO member and bases its security on nuclear deterrence, and therefore, the alliance must maintain strong collective nuclear capabilities.
Støre also noted that Norway is open to discussions with France on strategic cooperation.
Nuclear weapons in Europe and beyond
Recently, Finnish President Alexander Stubb said that Finland should be a full NATO member without restrictions, but added that Helsinki does not plan to host nuclear weapons in peacetime.
At the same time, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he would accept nuclear weapons from France or the UK "with pleasure," responding to Russian claims that Ukraine is seeking nukes from allied nations.
In addition, CNN reported that China is developing a new generation of nuclear weapons and has conducted at least one explosive test in recent years as part of modernizing its arsenal.
