Position of the President and the government

During a meeting with leaders of parliamentary parties, Stubb emphasized that the country’s defense is based on national capabilities as part of NATO’s collective system.

He stressed that Finland does not need nuclear weapons in peacetime, and no such proposals have come from partners.

"For Finland’s security, it is necessary to use the full protection of NATO. In addition, nuclear weapons will not be deployed on Finnish territory," the President said.

Prime Minister Petteri Orpo confirmed that the ruling coalition has taken the opposition’s views into account. The government plans to officially formalize the refusal to bring nuclear weapons into the country during peacetime.

Assessment of threats

According to Stubb, at the moment, Russia does not pose an immediate military threat to Finland.

Further development of the regulatory framework regarding the country’s nuclear status is now in the hands of the Finnish government.

Threats from Russia and Finland’s strengthening

Earlier reports noted that amid growing threats from Russia, Finland has created a special center to monitor and counter hybrid influences.

The country is also actively reviewing property ownership rules near strategic sites. For national security reasons, Helsinki intends to prohibit Russians from purchasing homes in certain zones.

These measures are due to Russia continuing to escalate tensions in the region. In particular, Russia is expanding its nuclear potential to Cold War levels.

Russia is also systematically increasing its military presence near NATO borders in preparation for a possible prolonged confrontation with the Alliance.
