Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has said that NATO is continuing to unravel, posing a threat to transatlantic unity.
"The greatest threat to the transatlantic community are not its external enemies, but the ongoing disintegration of our alliance," he noted.
Tusk stressed the need to "do what it takes to reverse this disastrous trend."
Trump drives changes within NATO countries
Tusk's comment came amid recent announcements by US President Donald Trump to withdraw part of the US military from Germany.
It recently became known that the Pentagon plans to withdraw 5,000 troops from Germany within 6–12 months. According to The New York Times, the department had been considering such a move for some time, but officials have now indicated that the decision is also intended as a punishment for Berlin over its position on the US war in Iran, which reportedly angered Trump.
In addition, Trump recently said similar actions could follow in Italy and Spain.
Note that amid sharply differing positions between the United States and NATO over the war in Iran, Trump has said he is seriously considering the possibility of the US leaving the Alliance.
