The Pentagon has explained that the decision to withdraw part of US troops from Germany is a "punishment" for Berlin's position on Iran, The New York Times reports.

On Friday, May 1, Pentagon representatives said they would recall 5,000 American troops from Germany and redeploy them to the United States and other foreign locations. The move is expected to take place over the next 6–12 months.

However, according to the NYT, the US Department of War, particularly during both of Donald Trump's presidential terms, has been considering reducing its military presence in Germany for several years.

At the same time, senior Pentagon officials privately indicated they want the move to be seen as "punishment for Germany" over its comments on the US war against Iran, which reportedly angered Trump.

In addition to the case in Germany, the US Department of War is canceling plans to deploy a missile-equipped artillery unit in Europe. The plan had been developed under former President Joe Biden.

According to sources, these steps would bring US troops in Europe back to their 2022 levels, before Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

US troop reductions in Europe

Previously, US President Donald Trump said Washington is considering reducing its troop presence in Germany, adding that a decision would be made soon. It was later revealed that the United States would withdraw 5,000 soldiers within 6–12 months.

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius also said Europe will have to strengthen its defense capabilities amid the reduced US presence.

Trump also told reporters that, in addition to Germany, he does not rule out withdrawing troops from Italy and Spain.
