NATO has identified Russia as the number one threat and warned that the Kremlin plans to regain control over the territories it held before the collapse of the Soviet Union, according to Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, Chair of the NATO Military Committee.
Russia is number one threat
"Russia is number one, of course. Of course, they just confirmed that recently, I think. There is no doubt about that," says Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone.
He also adds that in the non-traditional sphere, the threat from terrorist groups persists. According to him, such groups are currently lying low, but their activity could increase.
Kremlin's plans
When asked about specific threats to Europe, direct invasion or hybrid scenarios, the admiral answered directly: hybrid and non-traditional threats are already underway.
"We could expect that Russia would be eager to regain what it had before. Before, I mean, the crash of the USSR. So, I left it to you to understand, to see who could be the target," he says.
When asked whether this refers only to the Baltic states, Dragone replies: "You know, it's not just them."
Baltics on the front lines
Journalists note that officials from Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia have stated there is no immediate threat here and now.
"I think they are the right ones to have the feeling of this. So I trust them. And these are the ones who are just checking how the situation is evolving. They are right on the front line. So, nobody better than them can give us advice and information," the Admiral emphasizes.
According to him, NATO is present in the Arctic and in the East and is monitoring the situation in the South.
