In January, 5G will be launched in two Ukrainian cities. Pilot projects will be rolled out in the centers of selected cities, Minister of Digital Transformation Mykhailo Fedorov announced this during a live broadcast on TikTok.

"We had already announced this earlier. Very soon, within a few weeks, we will launch 5G for these cities — or more precisely, parts of these cities. This will be the first important step, which will then be scaled up. Gradually, we will go through this process," he said.

Fedorov noted that such projects are difficult to scale during a full-scale war.

"Because we have to consider military aircraft, radars, and other electronic warfare systems, for example, since 5G operates on certain frequencies and there needs to be compatibility. That’s why we have worked on this for a long time, testing with the military, and there will be a pilot project," the minister explained.

5G testing in Ukraine

Deputy Minister of Digital Transformation Stanislav Prybytkо recently stated that the full launch of the technology has been postponed until the end of martial law. At the same time, he noted that testing is already planned in three cities — Lviv, Kharkiv, and Borodianka.

According to Prybytkо, almost 22% of all phones in Ukraine support this technology. He added that it will be possible to cover a large part of the country with 5G connectivity by 2030.

As early as May 2023, Mykhailo Fedorov announced the start of 5G testing in Ukraine. He said the technology has many advantages and will provide new opportunities for both civilian and military use.

Earlier, the Ukrainian government adopted a resolution allowing communities to connect their generators to mobile base stations. This way, they can help operators maintain the network during blackouts.
