German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has suggested the possibility of initiating dialogue aimed at ending Russia’s war against Ukraine, The Guardian reports.
Ahead of the G7 summit, Merz said that "for the first time, a window can open for diplomacy" on achieving a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine.
He noted that he would like to discuss the issue with US President Donald Trump, who is also expected to attend the G7 summit in Évian-les-Bains, France, on June 15–17.
What is happening on the front line
It is worth noting that in recent times, Ukrainian positions along the front line have strengthened. According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Russia loses around 30,000 soldiers killed and wounded each month.
Zelenskyy recently wrote a letter to Russian leader Vladimir Putin proposing a meeting to discuss ending the war.
In response, the Kremlin leader said he does not see the point in a leaders’ meeting at this time.
As an argument, he once again referred to an alleged Ukrainian strike on a college dormitory in Starobilsk in the Luhansk region.
According to an RBC-Ukraine source, Ukraine had previously proposed organizing a leaders’ meeting with Russia during the G7 summit. Moscow responded by repeating its claim that Zelenskyy could come to Moscow if he wants a meeting.
Moreover, Russia carried out a massive strike on Ukraine. According to an RBC-Ukraine source, Kyiv believes this was, to some extent, a response to the proposal for a meeting.
