Israeli air defense intercepted drone launched from Lebanon - IDF
The Israeli air defense system intercepted a drone launched from Lebanon towards Western Galilee, according to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).
According to a statement from the Israeli military, the aerial target was intercepted this morning.
This occurred after an air alert was declared in the northern part of the country around 5 a.m.
"Following the sirens that sounded in the areas of Admit and Ya’ara, the IDF Aerial Defense System successfully intercepted a UAV that crossed from Lebanon toward the area of the Western Galilee," the IDF said in a Telegram post at 5:46 a.m.
The statement also mentioned that the air raid sirens were activated due to the potential risk of debris from the intercepted drone.
There are no reports of any consequences from potential debris impact.
Tensions between Israel and Lebanon
The incident occurred amid heightened tensions between Israel and Lebanon following a recent missile attack on Majdal Shams, a town in the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights. The attack hit a sports stadium, resulting in 12 fatalities, including many children.
Israel has accused the Islamist group Hezbollah, operating out of Lebanon, of carrying out the rocket strike. The organization itself denies responsibility for the attack.
In response, Tel Aviv promised retaliation for the Golan Heights attack. On the night of July 28, Israeli aircraft targeted Hezbollah positions in several areas of Lebanon.
Additionally, Israel has threatened devastating consequences for Lebanon and outlined a condition for avoiding such a scenario: the disarmament and withdrawal of Hezbollah forces. The Israeli Foreign Ministry also called for holding Iran and its supported groups - Hezbollah, Hamas, and the Houthis - fully accountable.
It has also been revealed that the Israeli Cabinet has authorized the Prime Minister and Defense Minister to make decisions regarding the scale and timing of the country's response to the rocket attack on the Golan Heights stadium.
