Occupation of Donetsk
Donetsk has been under occupation since spring 2014, when pro-Russian militants, supported by Russia, seized the city and declared the so-called Donetsk People's Republic.
Since then, an occupation administration integrated into the Russian system has been in place.
The city has become a rear base for Russian troops, and the population faces repression and forced mobilization. Ukraine and the international community consider Donetsk a temporarily occupied territory.
